Buddhist Monastery in Takht Bhai
The incredible Buddhist Monastery in Takht Bhai has captivated a large number of local and foreign tourists who come to see this astonishing remains which dates back to 1st century AD. The site is considered as an archeological wonder with so much details and fineness in its construction.
Listed in the World Heritage List by UNESCO, it is the only Buddhist monastery in the region that is in good shape.
The locals believe that the complex and the adjacent town got its name from two wells on the hills and the springs nearby. In Persian, Takht means Throne and Bahi means Water. This suggests that the name is associated with the water on the top and around the hill.
Location:
The Buddist Monastery is located in takht Bhai tehsil of district Mardan. It lies on 500 feet atop a hill just 2 km away from the main takht bhai bazar.
History:
The monastery is believed to be constructed somewhere around 1st century AD. It is proven from an inscription found in the complex that bears the name of Gondophares- the founder of Indo-Parthian kingdom that has ruled the region during the 1st century AD.
Due to its remote location on the top of hill, it has survived many invasions from the Huns during the 5th century AD. It is believed that the monastery was home to Budddhist monks until late 7th century AD.
Structure:
One has to climb hundreds of finely built stairs to get to the building of the complex.The building consists of the following, distinct but attached areas:
1: Numbers of stupa located in the central courtyard
2: Individual chambers that consist of individual cells, dining area and conference halls
3: Individual cells that are believed to be used for seclusion and meditation
All areas in the complex are constructed from local stones and are mortared with lime and mud.
